How to Get a Visa for Your Next Trip: A Practical Guide for Zimbabwean Travellers

Nothing kills a trip faster than a visa problem at the airport. We've seen clients turned away for a passport with fewer than six months' validity, for the wrong visa type, and — most commonly — for assuming a visa was "probably fine".

This guide walks you through the process, step by step, so you land at your destination with the right paperwork.

Step 1: Check whether you need a visa at all

Start with the destination's official immigration website or embassy page — not a random blog. Key questions:

  • Do Zimbabwean passport holders need a visa? (For many African destinations the answer is yes, but some offer visa-free or visa-on-arrival.)
  • Is it visa on arrival, e-visa, or sticker visa in advance? These are very different processes with very different timelines.
  • Does your passport need a minimum validity? Six months is the standard — if you're close to that, renew first.
  • Do you need blank pages? Most countries want at least two.

Step 2: Check your passport first, always

Before you pay for anything, check your passport:

  • Valid for at least 6 months beyond your travel date
  • At least 2 blank pages
  • In good physical condition (no water damage, torn pages, or unofficial stamps)

Passport renewals in Zimbabwe can take several weeks, so this is the first thing to do — not the last.

Step 3: Pick the right visa type

Tourist visa, business visa, transit visa, and e-visa are not interchangeable. A business visa doesn't cover tourism, and a tourist visa doesn't cover work. If your trip has more than one purpose (say, a conference plus sightseeing), take the strictest one that applies and mention the full itinerary in your application.

Step 4: Apply — with the correct documents

For most e-visa and embassy applications you'll need:

  • Passport scan (all info pages, not just the photo page)
  • Passport photos — follow the exact size and background rules
  • Flight itinerary (don't book the ticket until the visa is approved unless you're certain)
  • Hotel bookings or an invitation letter
  • Proof of funds (recent bank statements)
  • Yellow fever certificate for many African destinations — get vaccinated and carry the card

The classic mistake: uploading a blurry scan or a photo with the wrong background, then wondering why the application took three times as long. Take clean, high-contrast scans.

Step 5: Give yourself time

Rule of thumb for embassy sticker visas: apply 4–6 weeks before departure. E-visas are faster — usually 3–10 working days — but "usually" is doing a lot of work in that sentence. Government portals go down, payment systems reject cards, and peak season backs everything up.

If you're applying for multiple people, add extra time. A family of four's applications rarely process at the same speed.

Step 6: Double-check the details before you fly

  • Print your approved e-visa — some airlines won't let you board without seeing it.
  • Make sure names match your passport exactly, including middle names.
  • Check whether the visa is single or multiple entry — a single-entry visa won't let you pop over to a neighbouring country and come back.
  • Save a digital copy on your phone in case the printout gets lost.

When it makes sense to get help

You can absolutely do all of this yourself. But there are times when it's worth handing it over:

  • The country only accepts applications through an accredited agency
  • Your itinerary is complex (multi-country trips, cruises, overland routes)
  • You're short on time and the embassy appointment queue is long
  • The paperwork requires translation or certified copies

That's what our visa assistance service is for — we check your documents before they're submitted, handle the application, and track it so you're not refreshing a government portal every hour. Send us your trip details and we'll tell you exactly what you need.
